Keeping Timber at the Heart of the Design
Timber is used extensively throughout CIK Arena to create a warm, natural and welcoming environment. The visible wood also gives the large public building its distinctive Scandinavian character.
Covering the timber with conventional opaque materials would have changed the intended appearance. The solution therefore needed to improve its fire performance while allowing the grain, texture and natural qualities of the wood to remain visible.
Why Fire Protection Matters
Untreated wood can contribute to the spread of flames across walls and ceilings during a fire. It can also increase the amount of heat and smoke developing within the space.
This is particularly important in sports venues, cultural centres and other busy public buildings where many people may need to leave safely. Treating exposed timber helps limit its contribution to fire and supports the wider fire safety design of the building.
Protected with Nordic QVFR Clear
Nordic QVFR Clear was applied with a subtle white tint, giving the timber a lighter finish while keeping its natural grain visible.
When applied as a complete two coat system to an approved substrate, Nordic QVFR Clear can achieve a reaction to fire classification of B-s1,d0. This helps limit surface flame spread, smoke production and flaming droplets.
CIK Arena demonstrates an ideal use for the product: protecting large areas of visible interior timber without hiding the architectural finish.
